FarsiTel is a project started in Autumn 2009 by Sharif FarsiWeb, Inc. with the goal of making a modern, feature-rich, and easy-to-use mobile operating system for Iranian users, with a standard and slick implementation of Iranian locale including Arabic script, Persian user interface, Iranian calendar, and specialized configuration for Iranian users. Due to the strong background of FarsiWeb in localization and under joint investment of Sharif FarsiWeb, Inc. and Iran Technology Development Fund, this audacious goal was achieved in less than 9 months by localizing Android OS. The first version of FarsiTel operating system is ready for market now. Like any other product of FarsiWeb, it has deep roots in the free software/open source culture, incorporating only open source software and even using only open source tools for development. Other than Android, we have made use of FriBidi library and have developed whole the FarsiTel in GNU/Linux environment, using Java and C/C++ in Eclipse and Vim.
The project was moved in July 2010 to Iranian’s Congenial Mobile Co., a big and new company specialized in mobile industry, in order to build a platform for future developments of FarsiTel and making way for new products. Iranian’s Congenial Mobile Co. is going to release FarsiTel for Iran’s market and will continue the its development for future versions.
